Project Description: I make these stools from discarded textiles, found wood and dowels. Sometimes from parts of broken or unwanted chairs. They become sturdy, vibrantly colored places to rest and reflect.
For exhibition, this unique collection of stools is placed for visitors to sit on, with an accompanying guided mediation which you can listen to, whatever you're sitting on, here:
Each stool is an invitation to sit, rest and re-see the world around you.
I made each stool from what is discarded and unwanted but beautiful, as a contemplation of what we consume.
Currently, there is enough good clothing on the this planet to clothe the next six generations of humans. This complete surfeit of unneeded clothing, mostly made by people not earning a living wage, results from fast fashion and the relentless messaging that we don't have enough, and happiness and perfection is waiting for us in the purchase of a new garment. Many of us have never learned how to hem, or darn, or bring in a pair of pants, and we don't have time to learn. So we discard and shop for something new.
By transforming cast off clothing and scrap wood a colorful, unique spot to rest and re-see, I invite you to consider the potential of what your already have, what's here already, and that there is enough of everything to actually sit down.
