Elements: a love letter to all things everywhere
Project Description:
ISBN: 978 0 9889166 1 6 428 pages Sewn, softcover binding 8.5 x 6.5 x 1.6" Uncoated cream colored, 120 GSM paper, offset print. Retail $36 Wholesale Inquiries and related curriculum contact Hannah. This book includes two sets of drawings - 93+ each - paired with an intimate, sensual collection of the tangible, knowable stuff of each naturally occurring element of the periodic table. It is a reference book and introduction to the first hand experience of the elements, as well as a book of drawings, and it's about our inseparability with everything. This book is for any age of wonderer, poets living with scientists, engineers married to artists, right brains transitioning to left brains and vice versa. There are many entry points to the wealth of information in this book: the color, the lists, the artwork, the introduction or the overview. The graphic art in the book will appeal to a teenager, the practical and near comprehensive information will round out your reference section (to all things everywhere), it's grock-able by a 7 year old, and has many layers of depth from the practical to the mystical, praised by atheists as a beautiful way into the numinous, and those with a spiritual bent that's grounded and practical at the same time. There's an index that allows you to reverse a query into an element, and look instead at an object (what elements are in an orange?), and the bibliography at the back is included to assist educators and parents, and those wanting to go further into the science. There is an interdisciplinary curriculum for this book as well, and a brand new e-book! Find them both here. Discovering the collective knowledge and tangibility of the elements opens up a basic dimension of the world, body and being alive. As I explored I kept thinking, 'Where have I been this whole time?!?! How have I missed this?!' From other people's research and common sources, I've gathered phrases about each element that relate to the senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and where the element shows up in 'stuff' and in physical places, how it interacts with air, water and fire. I have avoided referencing mathematical and molecular formulas, references to science bigwigs, or special equipment....in a sense, un-siloing this information from Science, to yours. -- Please contact me for to learn about wholesale options or with questions, thoughts and ideas. |

Here is the kickstarter video that explains the initial process and introduces the artist and the vision for the book. The campaign ran at the end of 2018, and the book was successfully printed in September of 2019 with Fifth Avenue Press. The ebook came out in early 2020 and two digital formats are available for purchase on our shop.
Below is a film of a slideshow I gave at Nerd Nite in Ann Arbor on the creative process of making this book while the book and research was still in process. It's about 20 minutes. Enjoy!
