Visual Traces of Groups at Work: The Drawing Center
Site Specific, Time Based Installation. Found and fabricated adhesive materials, an eight foot scrolling paper list. Dimensions variable. Project Description: While the Spring Selections Group exhibition was being installed, I took an inventory of repeating events in the gallery over the course of the day. Observed events were then translated into a list and corresponding marks were placed in no particular order, on the wall and floor, a different kind for each repeating event observed. This was accomplished with the collaboration of the gallery staff and six volunteers observing surveillance footage, sound recordings and live notation of fleeting events like dragging, rolling, or leaning, steps taken, and hammer hits. From the observations, I developed a comprehensive numbered list of repeating elements. The installation included this posted list, a smaller handout version for viewers, and one mark on the walls, floor and ceiling for each recorded event, of which, in some instances, there were thousands. Visitors were invited to refer to the listed item number to find its corresponding mark on the walls and floor. The mark appears as many times as the event itself occurred. Actions are collective for everyone present. This project has also taken place at Babson College, in Room 204 of their Graduate Center over three months, and at the Urbano Project, with the help of student and staff observers. This project happens for different time intervals, and different scopes, as well as different materials relevant to the site's opportunities and limitations. |
