Statement
On, Around and Through is a project about re-expressing elusive content
to understand it better.
The basis of this work involves inquiry, as well as an activity
resembling field study, and a related framework of constraints through
which I begin studio work.
The inquiry and the whole project ask: Does the process of translation,
even when it fails to re-express something accurately in a different
language, yield insight?
In this project, I translate from film to textured drawing, from form
to surface and from surface to image. Also from idea to activity, and
from conditional framework to aesthetic instinct.
In the field study behind this work I record patterns from short films
of figures in motion and interaction (not shown). In my studio, I
re-express these records in a range of marks on prepared surfaces,
which resolve into tactile drawings (studies and condition drawings).
These yield further work which I consider formally in terms of color,
line and surface.
I work laterally on several pieces at once, in multiples which evolve
from one grouping to the next. I work in mixed media using new, found
and altered materials. I am drawn to all variety of paper, stacks and
layers. The imagery and forms explore planar cross-sections, depth,
color and texture.
There are many intersections at work here, among them converge creative
practice, social science, philosophy, and play. In a sense, the work
is simply an attempt to understand itself. |
